Corporate social responsibility

The A2A Group includes Sustainability as one of its five founding values(1), thereby emphasizing the constant attention and sense of responsibility it places on the effect that its business decisions may have on the environment, the economic fabric, the people who are part of the organization and communities in general. In fact it is by listening to stakeholders (employees, customers, investors, citizens, suppliers, communities) and getting them involved that A2A is able to develop its activities using a model of sustainable growth.
This model is put into practice by the Group by deploying certified management systems in the fields of quality, the environment and safety. More specifically, as far as the environment is concerned, the ISO14001 certification covers:

Plants

  • 100% of installed electric capacity

  • 83% of the thermal power and 87% of the electric power of the cogeneration pool from fossil/renewable sources

  • 100% of the waste treatment capacity in the waste to energy plants

  • 87% of the treatment capacity of the other plants of the integrated waste cycle

Networks

  • Brescia area electricity distribution network

  • Milan area gas and electricity distribution network

  • integrated water cycle of the Brescia Municipality (including the Verziano purifier)

  • Milan area and Brescia area district heating network.

In addition 12 assets are EMAS registered.

Since 2008 the Group has accounted for its economic, environmental and social performance in its annual Sustainability Report, which does not only act as a reporting tool but is also a planning document to all effects.
The Sustainability Report in fact includes the Group Sustainability Plan, which is a program setting out its main objectives, the steps taken to reach those objectives and the results achieved in relation to each stakeholder category. The Group completed the first three-year sustainability planning cycle in 2011, which fulfilled 54 commitments annually in the environmental, economic and social fields towards investors, employees, customers, suppliers and institutions.
Almost all the commitments undertaken in 2009 have been brought to a conclusion over the past three years, while after a series of internal consultations the Group has identified the new goals for the Sustainability Plan for the three-year period 2012-2014.
The Sustainability Report is prepared in accordance with the strict principles of the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) as integrated by the guidelines of the Energy Sector Utility supplement, obtaining a B+ level of compliance (verified by an external firm).
